Festival description:

We celebrate and invite works that are truly authentic and unique, that try to push beyond standard fare and convention in all genres of the moving image. The primary mission of the festival is to celebrate, recognize and help to cultivate this attitude towards the cinematic arts, and to expose West Virginia University students and the surrounding Morgantown community to the world of independent filmmaking, video and animation.Deadline for entries: March 19, 2018

The 2018 West Virginia Mountaineer Short Film Festival will be held on April 14 at the WVU Creative Arts Center in Morgantown.

Call for entries:

Works will be considered for eight competitive categories:

  • Documentary Short
  • Narrative Short
  • Experimental
  • Animation
  • Thematic entry: "Borders"
  • Student (College)
  • Young filmmakers (under 18)

The borders Theme

We invite submissions to the special category this year of “borders.” It is in the concept of the border that our conflicting urgings of belonging, identity, security, rights and ownership emerge. In a world that is relentlessly fluid and evolving, borders emerge, both physical and mental, in an attempt to reassert old orders and to stave off change. Just as dreams of great walls spring forth to quell fears of cultural dissolution, so too do the less tangible boundaries of like-mindedness, belief, heritage and tribe. While these divides are not new, they do seem to be ascendant. We invite works that reflect on these issues as they manifest in contemporary culture and life.

Entry Fee:
Regular Entry Fee: $10 for up to 2 entries
Student Entry Fee: $5 for up to 2 entries
Under 18: Free, up to 2 entries

If submitting using the online form, all works must be available for download (Vimeo, WeTransfer or Dropbox etc.) at screening quality and full resolution (preferably Quicktime, 1920 x 1080 or 1280 x 720, square pixels). Please insure that the link to the online version of your film or project is active until the date of the festival.
