RATIONALE:
By connecting animation with fields like psychology, sports and new media applications, the symposium Animafest Scanner is again at the frontline of the discourse and the interaction between theoretical and practical approaches. t is a meeting point of many leading artists and professionals within World Festival of Animated Film - Animafest Zagreb

International film and media scholars are invited to discuss the newest findings in the field of animation studies. During the two-day event, ideas and thoughts will be exchanged with festival guests, filmmakers, organizers of other festivals, producers, professionals, and scholars.

This year´s keynote speaker is the recipient of Animafest Zagreb Award for Outstanding Contributions to Animation Studies for 2018, Paul Wells, UK, one of the leading voices in the modern and contemporary animation studies.

Animafest Scanner V  primary goal is to create a synergy between theoretical and practical animation discourses, which is why it takes place in the context of screenings, exhibitions and other Animafest’s side events.

TOPICS FOR ANIMAFEST SCANNER V

Animating Horror
Characters in Animation
Animation and Sports
Animation at Large

DETAILED DESCRIPTION:

1. ANIMATING HORROR
Welcome to the dark side of animation! Aligned to this year’s festival focus, the panel targets animations referencing classical horror film traditions or playing out frightening and dark scenarios. In a certain light Animation means bringing life, but lot of artistic animations are dark and disturbing. Why is it such a common topic and what is behind the horror of  depicting fear and death through animation?

2. CHARACTERS IN ANIMATION
Animating figures and characters was always key to both, animated filmmakers and scholars. This can be summarized, for example, within the twelve principles of animation. But how did those studies of characters in animation evolve in the last decades, which aspects are different within the conceptualization of today’s animated characters and which ‘principles’ are still valid?

3. ANIMATION AND SPORTS
This year’s ‘Carte Blanche’ from our keynote speaker Paul Wells covers the wide-ranging studies of sport and animated films from around the globe. They are overlap in various ways, from sport activities of classical cartoon characters, to experimental animations referencing to sport, to animated data visualizations which contextualize today’s average sport-showcast.

4. ANIMATION AT LARGE
It is broadly accepted that animation expands beyond the classical animated film in various forms. The possibilities of new media encourage new approaches in practice and theory. This year the focus lies on hybrid forms of animation as title sequences in films and TV series, or illustrative animations in science, but also covers the wide variety of e.g. animated diagrams, GIFs and animated emoticons.

Film and media researchers are invited to submit an abstract for a 25-minute talk (in English) on a historical or theoretical perspective thematically related to this year's topics.
