UK Wins Big at the 21st Stuttgart Fest

 itfsWith a new record of 85,000 visitors (making Dittmar Lumpp, Festival Managing Director, to talk of a major cultural event, which extends far beyond the Stuttgart and Germany)  the 21st edition of ITFS  gave its prizes.

The daring short Through the Hawthorn, which narrates a session betwen a psychiatrist, a schizophrenic patient and his mother, and was directed by Anna Benner, Pia Borg and Gemma Burditt (UK, 2013) won the Grand Prix (International Competition) of the Stuttgart Fest. 

The Lotte Reiniger award was given to "Home" by Royal College of Art student Luiz Stockler  (UK, 2012), whereas the Oscar-awarded Mr. Hublot (Alexandre Espigares, Laurent Witz) won the SWR Audience Award.

Another RCA student, Daniela Sherer, won the Best Student Film award for The Shirley Temple (UK, 2013), an abstract/narrative short about childhood, adulthood, escapism and sexuality.

A special mention was given ex aequo to two films. The Age of Curious (Luca Roth, RCA, UK 2013) and "Matzofim" / "Floats" (Idan Barzilay, Mor Israeli Bezalel Academy of Arts & Design, Israel 2013).

 The award for the best animated feature film was given to "Kotonoha no Niwa" / "The Garden of Words" by Makoto Shinkai (Japan 2013). The film focuses on the 15-year-old Takao, an aspiring shoemaker, who keeps meeting a mysterious woman whenever it rains.

 The Stuttgart awards (called Trickstar) are endowed with a prize money of over 70,000 euros.

Guests included the Oscar-winners Chris Landreth, Thomas Stellmach and Alexandre Espigares, the Emmy-winner Eric Shaw as well as celebrities from politics, commerce and culture.
