On the first decade of the CHILEMONOS International Animation Festival, the “Icon Director” award will be awarded again. On this special occasion it will be received by Jorge R. Gutiérrez: Famous Mexican animator maker of "Maya and the Three", who, along with being awarded, will speak about his next original production for Netflix.

Jorge R. Gutiérrez has consolidated his career by establishing a remarkable personal seal. The director, who lived in Tijuana for much of his life, has based his work on the preservation and a deep knowledge of Mexican traditions, venturing from there with well-worked scripts and plots that excite viewers of all ages.

The “Icon Director” award is given to filmmakers who not only have triumphed and consolidated their works at the top of the international animated industry but have also done so by maintaining their identity and generating a seal of their own. Some directors who have previously received this distinction are Carlos Saldanha (“Ice Age” and “Rio”), Peter Lord (“Chicken Run”) and Shin'ichirō Watanabe (“Cowboy bebop”).

Internationally recognized for productions like"¡Mucha lucha!" (2004) and "The Book of Life" (2014), Gutierrez will be the star guest of the 10 th CHILEMONOS International Festival, where he will receive the CHILEMONOS “Icon Director” award and will make an exclusive presentation to the public about his new project, "Maya and the Three".

Highlights to the fact that Gutiérrez, has also worked as scriptwriter, voice actor and producer, was already present at the fifth edition of the CHILEMONOS International Animation Festival (2016), where he shared with the attendees through his masterclass "The story behind success: 'The Book of Life'”, talking about details of the production and answering questions about his iconic feature film.

This activity was carried out in a full room at the Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral (GAM), bringing together more than 250 people for just over an hour and a half, and closed with a standing ovation by the audience.

Jorge was able to connect with the public thanks to the honesty and eloquence with which he shared his experiences. In the celebration of his first decade, it is an honor for us, CHILEMONOS, to have his presence again, since he is currently one of the most important Latin American representatives in the animation industry - Erwin Wilo, Gómez director of the CHILEMONOS Festival.

Jorge R. Gutierrez’s next premiere, "Maya and the Three" will have nine chapters and will tell the story of Maya, a warrior princess with Mesoamerican inspiration who embarks on an epic quest to fulfill an ancestral prophecy “to save humanity from the vengeful gods of the underworld”.
