The Breadwinner, This Magnificent Cake!, Enough Win at the 2018 European Animation Awards

It was a night of at the 2nd European Animation Emile Awards, where all registered voters cast their votes in 18 categories for Short and Students Films, Feature Films and TV/Broadcast Films.

The Oscar-nominated The Breadwinner (Ireland/ Luxembourg/Canada) took home all 4 awards it was nominated for: Best Direction (Nora Twomey), Best Storyboard (Giovanna Ferrari, Julien Regnard, Stuart Shankly), Best Character Animation in A Feature Film (Fabian Erlinghäuser, John Walsh, Lorraine Lordan, Jeremy Purcell, Viktor Ens, Nicolas Debray, Geoff King & Emmanuel Asquier-Brassart) and Best Background and Character Design for a Feature film (Ciaran Duffy, Reza Riaihi (art directors), Sandra Andersen (character designer) .

Nora Twomey talks about her award:

Another political film, Funan by Denis Do, was awarded Best Writing for a Feature Film (Denis Do & Magali Pouzol) and Best Sound Design (Nicolas Leroy, Michel Schillings, Nicolas Tran Trong) - 2 out of the 4 Emile Award nominations it received.

The documentarian adventure Another Day of Life (Poland/ Spain/ Belgium/ Germany) by Raúl de la Fuente & Damian Nenow only got one win for its soundtrack (Mikel Salas) out of 5 Emile nominations. No awards for the Swiss/ Croatian/ German/Finnish co-production Chris the Swiss by Anja Kofmel.

In the shorts category, Emma De Swaef and Marc James Roels won for This Magnificent Cake! Belgium, France, Netherlands. This was a very strong category, which included works by Nikita Diakur, Martina Scarpelli, Nienke Deutz, and Miloš Tomic (Find all the 2018 Emile Award Nominations here).

In the Background and Character Design for a Short Film competition (Fool) Time Job by Gilles Cuvelier took home the Emile Award, while Best Commissioned Film was Magnus Igland Møller for his Martin Luther  (Denmark).

In the Student films competition, stop-motion Enough (Anna Mantzaris, UK) won over Paulina Ziolkowska  (Bless you!​​),  Rachel Gutgarts (A Love Letter to the One I Made up​​), Nata Metlukh (Pura Vida), and Noémie Buffat (Petits Poissons​​).

 

4 Emile Awards for the Danish/UK Cartoon Network production The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe directed by Christian Bøving-Andersen and Eva Lee Wallberg: Best Direction, Best Storyboard for a TV Production ( Kenneth Ladekjær, Eva Lee Wallberg), Best Character Animation for a TV Production (Tina Lykke Thorn, Henrik Sønniksen, Mikkel Vedel & Eva Lee Wallberg), and Best Background and Character Design (Mikkel Sommer, Birk Von Brockdorff).

The French film by Olivier Cossu, A Man Is Dead (read our review) won the Best Soundtrack Award (TV Production) for Yan Volsy and Pablo Pico. Claire Kitson was the recipient of the Lotte Reiniger Lifetime Achievement award .

The 2nd edition of the Emile Awards, took place in partnership with the Région Hauts de France and Pictanovo on the 8th of December 2018 at Le Nouveau Siècle theatre in Lille, France. The Emile Awards, brainchild of Didier Brunner, Jean-Paul Commin and the European Animation Awards Association President Peter Lord (co-founder of Aardman Studio), aim to reward the excellence of the European animation film industry as well as its diversity. 18 Emile Awards trophies were awarded, and Clare Kitson was honoured with a Lotte Reiniger Lifetime Achievement Award. This year, the Emile Awards Ceremony was followed by the screening of "Yellow Submarine" (1968) directed by George Dunning , celebrating its 50th Anniversary with a restored version.
