Cosmonaut by Kaspar Jancis

Cosmonaut by Kaspar Jancis

Kaspar Jancis (Crocodile, Piano, Villa Antropoff -with Vladimir Leschiov) has a new animation short Cosmonaut (production: Joonisfilm).

An old Cosmonaut lives the same kind of life now in his flat in a concrete panel apartment building as he did in his youth in a space station. As before, he still carries out heroic missions and misses his close relatives. His close relatives see the situation altogether differently. Is this old man capable of coming to grips with the norms that apply in society?A cosmonaut will always be a cosmonaut. To the very end - Film Synopsis

Film Review (Vassilis Kroustallis):
Estonian animation scene is justly celebrated for its eccentricity, quirky design and characters and its aloof editing. Kaspar Jancis himself is part of the scene, especially with films like Crocodile (2009) and Piano (2015). Yet in Cosmonaut, he does something different and equally interesting. He takes a taboo topic (ageing), prepares a completely classical narrative film -who said that narrative films are easier to make?- and crafts a perfectly relatable and empathetic story about a bygone era (spaceships and Communists / Cosmonauts). There is a welcoming sadness in Jancis' film, and an inevitable play between generations. Grandson and grandpa are here the two sides of the same coin, and grandson ensures perhaps an even more adventurous future than the erstwhile celebrated cosmonaut. Provided, of course, that he'll avoid the falls from windows and balconies -a constant motif in Jancis' work. Cosmonaut makes its editing transitions between past and present informative, and has its musical sequences alert to its subject matter. Sometimes it's nice to be simple.
