BAFTA nominations 2013: Short and feature animated films
According to the British Academy rules, only 3 feature animated films were nominated for a BAFTA award: Tim Burton's Frankenweenie, Pixar's Brave and Laika's ParaNorman.
Two out of the three nominated films are stop-motion features:
- Brave (Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman, Pixar)
- Frankenweenie (Tim Burton, Disney/Pixar)
- ParaNorman (Sam Fell, Chris Butler, Laika)
Both Disney's Wreck-It Ralph and Dreamworks' Rise of the Guardians were left out of competition.
After the exclusion of both films, it now seems that the critically favored, Tim Burton's Frankenweenie is a definite favorite to win this BAFTA animation race.
In the short animated film category, 3 films were also selected:
- HERE TO FALL - Kris Kelly, Evelyn McGrath
- I'M FINE THANKS - Eamonn O'Neill
- THE MAKING OF LONGBIRD - Will Anderson, Ainslie Henderson
The Irish I'm Fine Thanks by Eamonn O'Neill is an intriguing portrait of a person in distress.
The Making of Longbird (Will Anderson, Ainslie Henderson) portrays an unusual 'behind-the-scenes' reality, as an animator struggles with the character he's about to create.
Here to Fall (Kris Kelly, Evelyn McGrath) describes what happens when a girl receives a call from her father, and then she sets off on a frantic journey through a chaotic world.
A big surprise: the multi-awarded and Oscar-shortlisted Head Over Heels (Tim Reckart) [info-trailer] was left out of the BAFTA nominations.The BAFTA 2012 winners in the animated categories were the Oscar-awarded Rango (Gore Verbinski) and the Academy Award-nominated A Morning Stroll (Grant Orchard, Studio AKA)
The EE British Academy Film Awards (the new official name of BAFTA Awards) will take place on Sunday, February 10, 2013, at the Royal Opera House, in Covent Garden.
