'Luna Rossa' by Priit and Olga Pärn Opens in Estonian Cinemas

Priit and Olga Pärn's animated film Luna Rossa opens Estonian cinemas this April (from 3 to 7 April), while competing at the 2025 Annecy International Animation Festival (Short film competition) this June -one of the 35 animation shorts selected.

After its November 2024 PÖFF Shorts Baltic Premiere, the film by master animation director Priit Pärn and Olga Pärn will get its Estonian theatrical release.  Pärn's “Luna Rossa” is an Estonian-French co-production film, produced by Eesti Joonisfilm (producer Kalev Tamm) and Miyu Productions (co-producers Emmanuel-Alain Raynal and Pierre Baussaron). The film's directors and art directors are Priit and Olga Pärn, and the script was written by Priit Pärn. The film stars Karolin Jürise, Tanel Saar and Ago Soots. In addition, Priit Pärn was the film's choreographer, along with Tanel Saar.

Regarding the film's Annecy competition selection, both directors reacted accordingly:

Priit Pärn: ’’I think the ice started to move – great! ’’
Olga Pärn: ’’We met with Priit 20 years ago in Annecy. It feels good to come back in June to the blooming linden trees around the beautiful Lake Annecy!’’

The story takes place in Italy. The relationships between the main characters, two men and two women, are complex and intentionally presented in a way that leaves enough room for different interpretations for the viewer. At the same time, the story moves steadily towards a specific goal. In what direction, the authors refuse to reveal, leaving the joy of discovery to future film viewers. 'Luna Rossa' is made using the motion capture technique (MoCap), not used in animated films in the Scandinavian-Baltic region so far in animation: the movements of actors equipped with sensors are recorded on computers as 3D puppets, which are then used as the source material for 2D drawing animation.
